Great Polish-Lithuanian Families.
“Free men with free men” – the Union of Lublin 1569–2019.
Genesis, significance, inspirations on the 450th anniversary of the Polish-Lithuanian Union

The Historical Museum of the City of Tarnobrzeg, 5–7 September 2019

The focus of the second conference we are organising will be on Polish-Lithuanian families, this time in the period of the Union of Lublin - the period of the “Common State” and the period of partitions, when its memory was still vivid and cultivated with respect. As Professor Władysław Konopczyński wrote about the union formed between the Crown of the Polish Kingdom and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania: “Never before in the history had separate nations entered into a more durable marriage under lower pressure. It happened so according to the wish of hundreds of thousands, to the disgrace of a few privileged and to their pride. It must have been felt in the separated city of Połock and in Smoleńsk, and in the capitals of all states, that here, it was not a tiny administrative change that had occurred [...], but an act of great historical significance”.

The Act of Lublin not only created a single state, but also granted the same prerogatives to the Lithuanian nobility and confirmed the titles of the knez families originating from the dynasts. In this way, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (existing from 1569 to 1795) was formed. The creation of a single state made rapid promotion possible for the Lithuanian nobility, while the Polish elites obtained the right to acquire land in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania which, in the 17th century, was one of the main reasons for large magnate fortunes to be accumulated, with a decisive or causative impact on the state authority. An important issue which should be emphasized during the conference is an analysis of the process leading to the Act of Lublin, its genesis, positive and negative results of the Polish-Lithuanian real union, as well as the process of awarding and confirming nobility titles. An important issue is also the relevance of the Polish-Lithuanian heritage in the context of integration processes occurring in the contemporary world and the legend (white and black) of the 1569 achievement.

We encourage you to participate in the second academic session and present the results of your research related to this broad study area. Conference proceedings will be published in a scored scientific journal, issued by the organizers as a separate volume.

Any additional information, a conference programme and editorial requirements will be sent to your e-mail addresses after the list of speakers has been closed.
